Fire / Compartmentation & Separation / Atrium (Compartmentation and Separation)

Interesting …. I’ve inspected hundreds of these, but I’m clueless about Atriums. Atriums are common in Hotels, Office lobbies, Shopping complexes & some Education & Entertainment buildings.

Atriums are 2 or more open storeys within a clear building space (including non-fire separated spaces). These are lots of Rules – mainly:

    • correct FRLs
    • making sure fires are quickly suppressed – sprinkler type
    • how people can safely find exits.

My experience is Owners are not told these Rules & these types of spaces can become serious risk to occupants when spaces are modified, paths of travel altered, roofs enclosed or sprinklers changed without expert advice.
