Structure / Timber / Balconies & Decks (Timber)

1 min read 09 August 2024

     Decks require skill to build:

    • proper (uncollapsible) end support – bearing is now required using joist hangers to compliment connections
    • waterproof / flash carefully from opening threshold to deck

    Under tiles:

    • use durable H3 / Class 1 timber & fixings (Galv. & 316 SS)
    • LVLs are much stiffer
    • slope joists. Plan for NCC 2025 compliance.
    • I always use a Waterproof membrane NEVER just water resistant
    • glue & screw 6mm counter sheeting of FC to stop large tiles from cracking over joints.

Little but important technical bits are:

    • cross bracing of larger decks. NB. The 4m Rule call for 2nd set of straps.
    • protect / flash tops of joists under timber decking
    • carefully plan double joists / blocking for balustrade posts / spigots
