Decks require skill to build:
- proper (uncollapsible) end support – bearing is now required using joist hangers to compliment connections
- waterproof / flash carefully from opening threshold to deck
Under tiles:- use durable H3 / Class 1 timber & fixings (Galv. & 316 SS)
- LVLs are much stiffer
- slope joists. Plan for NCC 2025 compliance.
- I always use a Waterproof membrane NEVER just water resistant
- glue & screw 6mm counter sheeting of FC to stop large tiles from cracking over joints.
Little but important technical bits are:- cross bracing of larger decks. NB. The 4m Rule call for 2nd set of straps.
- protect / flash tops of joists under timber decking
- carefully plan double joists / blocking for balustrade posts / spigots
