Why Eaves Gutters are a Smarter Choice

When it comes to roof drainage, eaves gutters offer a time-tested and reliable solution. Unlike box gutters, which require internal drainage and careful waterproofing, eaves gutters are an external system that efficiently directs rainwater away from the building. But to make the most of them, proper design and installation are key.

Getting the Size Right

One of the most critical aspects of eaves guttering is ensuring they are sized correctly. This involves calculating the roof area, slope, and expected rainfall intensity. For larger roof areas, consulting a hydraulic engineer is a wise move to prevent overflow and ensure optimal drainage.

Choosing the Right Materials

Not all gutters are created equal. In coastal areas, near pools, or beneath roof-mounted pool heating, steel rainwater goods and rivets should be avoided due to the risk of corrosion. Instead, opt for colour-coated metal, which not only enhances durability but also reduces future maintenance requirements.

Installation Best Practices

Proper installation can make all the difference in ensuring your gutters function effectively and look great. Here are some key rules to follow:

  • Raise the top of the fall: This prevents fascia exposure at low points.
  • Plan downpipes strategically: Space them no more than 12 metres apart, place them near valleys, and ensure they’re protected from vehicle damage.
  • Use spreaders correctly: If discharging onto a lower roof, avoid directing water over a sheet joint.
  • Install ladder brackets: Essential for safe access over softer aluminium or copper gutters.
The Finer Details That Matter

For those who love the technical side of guttering, here are a few extra details:

  • Maintain a 1:500 minimum fall to ensure proper drainage.
  • Turn down valley ends and ensure sarking and low-pitch troughs are correctly integrated, especially in exposed locations.
  • Long valleys can cause water spray in heavy rain—consider a 50mm shield on the gutter edge to prevent overflow.
  • Use gutter guards in treed areas to prevent clogging.
  • Apply neutral cure sealant at all joints, particularly at nozzles and mitres, to prevent leaks.
