Skills / Quality / Joint Anatomy

Yep, this was another moment of joy this week! I reckon AJ has illustrated the very basic but complex ingredients of one of the highest risk areas of our work – fire stopping & movement joints. No one ever taught me this stuff …. and if you and I don’t know it,  how will the apprentices and their bosses get to know how to do this work properly?

Joint Science is just that – SCIENTIFIC. The terms I’d like you to remember are:
  • Annular Gap (AG)
  • Sealant Depth (SD)
  • Cold Joint
  • click through to understand the ‘yin / yang’ of MOVEMENT

FTR, there are strict requirements for AG and SD depending upon the type of pipe, cable, duct, service and the material of the ‘peno’. Candidly, we need to consider planning, aligning, cutting, sealing and verifying all fire rated or high movement risk joints as a ‘craft’. It is worthy of our attention. I want TAFE and all Universities to take note and use this Tool ASAP.

Ranting on – I’m going to bundle Joint Anatomy with Gravity Drainage and Durability as the e=mc2 of our Industry – it is the knowledge that ‘supercharges’ our future success.
