Services / Electrical / Lightning Protection System

More enlightening detail.

I’ve been close to lightning on 3 occasions including my home’s electrical systems & appliances being ‘smashed’ by a direct hit 5 months ago …😥 😥

And I’ve seen lightning risk exquisitely detailed on hundreds of historic, religious & multi-storey buildings.

So what do Designers, Contractors & Owners need to know about this science?

Larger buildings need Electrical Engineer’s advice. However, it needs to be someone clever. To get us all started, here are some basics so you can plan facades & electrical layouts better.

    • a lightning earth electrode must be at least 3m from the building’s earth stake & minimum 500mm deep
    • down conductors are required at no more than 20m intervals
    • earth bonds (equipotential bonds) are logical & protect occupants. These are required within 1m of both ends of the lightening protection system. There is also a maximum 10m Rule to down conductors & added bonds if there is predominately metal structure. Bonds must be no closer that 1m from down conductor.

Don’t let lightning ruin your reputation.
