To notch or not to notch
Timber is an age-old way to build. Especially for alts & adds – so easy to move around difficult sites / ‘slide’ into roofs. However, there are simple technical Rules Carpenters & their Supervisors can easily get wrong. And it is usually because someone naughty weakened the structure with:
- holes
- notches
- offset load paths
- fixings missing or in the wrong place.
Strength relies on a mix of ingredients too:
- correct size – camber or ‘rounds’ up
- durability esp. when used externally / next to wet areas
- fixing Rules incl. wind restraint
- strict adherence to nogging or blocking Rules esp. under joints or to transfer point loads.
