Getting the Basics Right: Meter Installation Guidelines

When it comes to installing meters, small mistakes can lead to big problems. Whether you’re working on a residential project or a commercial build, understanding the rules behind meter placement and installation is essential for compliance and efficiency.

Essential Meter Installation Rules

Here are the basics to ensure your work starts on the right foot:

  1. Label Earth Electrodes Permanently
Ensure earth electrodes are properly and permanently labelled. This small detail is often overlooked but crucial for long-term safety and compliance.
  2. Gas Meter Relief Valves
Keep gas meter relief valves at least 1 metre away from any openings, like windows or doors. This prevents dangerous gas buildup in enclosed spaces.
  3. Relief Gullies
The top of relief gullies must be positioned 150mm lower than the lowest floor waste. This avoids potential flooding issues inside the building.
  4. Clear Access for Maintenance
Most meters require at least 1.2 metres of clear space for maintenance. Make sure they’re not obstructed to avoid delays in servicing.
  5. Service Meter Visibility
All service meters should be easy to find. Clear and logical placement saves time and prevents confusion during inspections or emergencies.
  6. Gas and Electrical Separation
Always adhere to rules about keeping gas and electrical services apart. It’s a matter of safety and compliance.
